Hawaii Server Report - March 2003

This month, there is new progress to report on the server!
Since the “brain damage” - (Jurians description) - to the Wisco Server
a few weeks ago, the need for this server to become operational has
intensified. I purchased two books on Linux, since I am unfamilure with
the language. Previous experience has only been with MS-DOS, Windows
based servers, and some Unix. These reference books should come in handy
in the weeks to come.

Last weekend, Jurian and I set aside some time on Sunday to load the
Debian Linux system software to the server. (Thanks again Jurian, your
help was invaluable!) According to Jurian, the install went smoothly - much
faster than with other people he has talked through an install. Still, it
took us close to four hours to complete over IRC.
Now all that is needed is to link it to the internet, so Jurian can
configure it for our uses. We will do this once I am established in my home,
and have the cable modem installed. When this report is presented to the
Board, it should be the first weekend of our move into the house, so my plan
is to have the service and server established within a week or so. We’ll
either link him through another computer to config the server, or purchase
and install a communications card for the server itself. If we go with the
new card for the server, I’ll coordinate with him on type, size, speed, etc.,
and install it. In the mean time, we will just have to make due with re
routing mail, booklet orders, etc., until this thing fully functional. But,
we are on the way, and the new system is great!
